The Launch of the 2004 Pirelli Calendar
On its 40th anniversary, the Pirelli Calendar continues to be considered one of the most celebrated icons in corporate communications and is now one of the most eagerly anticipated events for lovers of photography, fashion and beauty the world over.
The event, produced by Fisher Productions for Pirelli annually, is held to launch the new calendar to invited guests and international press. After a press briefing at BAFTA the main focus of the day turned to the historical Royal Courts of Justice Building in London, the venue for the Gala Dinner.

Over 600 VIPs gathered for a champagne reception, amongst subtly lit exhibits, arches and floral displays while ambient music floated through each cocktail area from the DJ below. Beautiful Pirelli hostesses then led guests down the great staircases into the main hall where a delicious 4-course dinner was to be served.

The 2004 Calendar, created by Nick Knight, world-famous British photographer, has been described as…‘vibrant in its colour, abstract in its design and magical to the eye’… and all these elements had to be reflected in the event. Fisher’s creative team used every element to create the modern and contemporary feel required, from multi coloured dinner plates to inspired floral displays reminiscent of Vivienne Westwood dresses.

The desire to move away from the traditional screen shape with hard edged surround, resulted in Fisher building a huge white, abstract-shaped wall, which enabled us to project hypnotic animations over its whole surface. Through the animations we created a box into which to project the required 16:9 imagery, maintaining the ultimate resolution for the “Making of the Pirelli Calendar” video.

MTV’s Kristiana Backer compéred the evening, joined on stage by Nick Knight and a selection of this years calendar models including Alek Wek, Liberty Ross, Pollyana Mcintosh, Jessica Miller and Amanda Moore.

During the main dinner, crew worked behind the scenes to turn the venue’s Crypt area into a contemporary after dinner lounge. Funky retro furniture and sheepskin rugs were placed amongst ambient lighting and our new egg lamps (now available for hire). Such was the excitement surrounding the 2004 Calendar that many guests partied late into the night. Many were delighted to have their calendars signed by the models in attendance.

Fisher Productions were responsible for organising all the day’s events, including event design, software/animation creation, production and logistics as well as co-ordinating the models, photographer and international press. Our thanks, as always, goes to our excellent suppliers namely: Mustard (Catering); Vertigo Rigging Ltd (Rigging); Blitz Vision (AV); Dobsons Sound Productions (Sound); Lavender Green (Flowers); Terry Brown (Design); The Boutiq (Animation); Bicknell Scenery Ltd (Scenery)
