Our team had great fun working on this brief from Nibbs Events for the War of the Worlds Premiere staged earlier this year in Leicester Square. We sourced crashed cars to create a collision scene, approx 40 tonnes of building rubble, 6 tonnes of soil, props including a telephone box, lamp posts, café furniture, broken window frames and a postman’s trolley. Actors were hired to play the parts of bewildered tourists caught in the alien battle. Over 1000m of blood-like alien veins and capillaries were model-made, that appeared to emerge from a large concrete tunnel segment, and had wrapped themselves around the “damaged” central fountain.
Periodic smoke and flame effects erupted from the three 3m diameter bespoke-built craters and as guests walked past, there were explosions from the cars and sparks from a fallen lamp post. Through the tunnel guests smelt the stench of the burnt and smouldering remains of the city. A skeletal building wall 4m high was built to hide the generators within the garden.
Such an ambitious project came with its fair share of logistical challenges. We had to accommodate a huge security presence throughout the build and the show due to the stars in attendance (namely Tom Cruise). In addition to this it was requested by the local authority (with whom we’d had extensive dealings to ok the whole event) that the gardens were open for a “public viewing” prior to the official arrival of invited guests.
The whole project, while a big challenge, was immensely enjoyable and a huge success. Guests were certainly surprised by what they encountered, as were the many tourists in Leicester Square that afternoon.
